A Morning's Walk

Updated: Oct 24, 2020

Day 3- It was such a beautiful day! I decided to take my BFF up to the waterfalls I would hike to as a kid. It isn’t really much of a ‘hike’ to the waterfalls themselves but you can keep going on a 10 ml. round trip if you want. The trail is well used so it is unlikely that you will see much wildlife at all. It is good as always to be prepared!

Even the drive to the trailhead is gorgeous! I couldn’t help but pull over to get a stunning view of the mountains in all their morning splendor 🙂 the air in this part of the world is maybe the most surprising difference from what you’ll find anywhere else in the world. It’s sweet from the pine and musty from the years of fallen leaves and branches. This day there was also the faint bitter smell of smoke from forest fires north and west of us. This kind of air just soaks into your soul and makes you feel free! (maybe that’s why Montana drivers can’t drive 😉 their just slowing to smell the mountain air).

Up we hiked about a mile to the falls greeting our fellow hikers with brisk ‘Good Mornings’. We chatted a little but a pleasanter silence lay between us as we listened to the birds on the air and the chatter of squirrels in the trees.

Pine Creek Falls was every bit as stunning as I remembered them to be! I wished we could climb back further into those mountains but it was not to be. We hiked out again to join my grandparents at the Katabatic Brewing Company.

Katabatic as us locals call it is a really unique place. It hasn’t been around for very long but it's quickly become a favorite watering hole. On nights like that one, local musicians gather in the corner to jam with one another and remember days gone by. Grandpa and I danced and my friend even learned to dance a little too! They always end the night with the same songs, a medley of Sweet By & By and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. We made our way home full up from our adventures and good ol’ 1950s style hamburgers from Marks In 'n’ Out. How time flies!!!
